What makes a California Partnership for Long Term Care policy unique?
Very simply put, the Partnership program provides lifetime asset protection. Most long term care policies have benefit limits. Many that do offer “lifetime benefits” charge a larger premium for this “blank check. They have to. So in other words, your long term care policy may have a 3 or 5 year benefit limit, or a maximum lifetime benefit limit. What happens then? Well, what generally happens is that those assets you bought the policy to protect, may be at risk. Before qualifying for Medi-Cal, you may have to liquidate the life savings and assets that you had hoped would go to your loved ones. But a California Partnership for Long Term Care plan can offer “lifetime asset protection” as a unique feature of the policy (there are of course, certain policy limits to the “asset protection”). Talk to Bruce Sackrison about the limits and qualifications related to the the partnership plan.
How does a Partnership plan work?
Your California Partnership for Long Term Care approved policy will do what all good long term care policies do – pay covered expenses when you need it to pay them (subject to policy provisions of course). But in the situations where the policy has exhausted its benefits, and you start having to dip into your personal assets, the Medi-Cal “spend down” rules are altered in your favor. You may still have to contribute a part of your income toward your care, but every dollar paid out in benefits by your policy counts as a dollar of assets that you get to keep while still qualifying for Medi-Cal assistance. Here is an excellent brochure published by the State of California explaining more of the details of the California Partnership for Long Term Care.
